At
the simplest level, nail biting is a habit. We also
know that the more stressed we are generally, the more
likely we are to bite our nails. We're all familiar
with the term "It was a nail biting moment".
So nail-biting is both a habit and a stress related
response. Many nail biters will know that their habit
tends to come and go, usually worsening when stress
levels increase and naturally reducing or stopping in
relaxed time. Others do nail biting like an Olympic
Sport...full time, whatever is happening! Actually,
when people arrive for treatment they are often a
little embarrassed for seeking treatment for something
so seemingly trivial. You really needn't be! Nail
biting and finger biting can be quite distressing.
Nail biting can cause soreness and infection and
certainly can be a cause of ongoing pain. Any habit we
seemingly can't break can cause quite a lot of
distress so please know that if you'd like some help
with nail-biting you'll be welcomed, and nobody will
think it's too trivial. Of course for many people the
issue is cosmetic too. You may just have decided that
your nail-less hands are an embarrassment. This too is
very common. Hypnotherapy is great for habit breaking.
We usually expect to make short work of breaking the
nail biting habit with powerful post hypnotic
suggestions which can re-condition your natural
responses to stress and habit. Treatment is therefore
usually quick. Two to four sessions is normal for nail
biting. Sometimes to succeed we need to reduce anxiety
generally, but for most, breaking the nail biting
habit is quick and easy with the right understanding!
One session, with a follow up will usually
suffice.
If
you'd like to discuss it further just contact
me to arrange a way forwards. In really
straightforward cases, we might skip the formal
consultation and get straight on with it as we do with
smoking. If there is added anxiety we might need to
take our time a little more. I'll ask you a few
questions when you call or contact me and we'll take
it from there.
